Instructions, formula & packing limits

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure one product as a rectangular box, including any retail packaging.
  2. Measure the carton’s usable internal length, width, and height.
  3. Use the same unit for every field. The result updates automatically.
  4. Review the orientation and grid arrangement, then allow room for padding and real-world tolerances.

Calculation method

The calculator tests every unique axis-aligned rotation of the product. For each orientation, it divides each carton dimension by the matching product dimension, rounds down to a whole number, and multiplies the three counts:

Quantity = floor(Carton L ÷ Product L) × floor(Carton W ÷ Product W) × floor(Carton H ÷ Product H)

The orientation with the highest whole-unit quantity is returned. Volume utilization equals the total product volume divided by carton volume.

Example

A 20 × 12 × 8 cm product in a 60 × 40 × 32 cm carton fits as a 5 × 2 × 4 grid when oriented 12 × 20 × 8 cm, giving an estimate of 40 units.

Important limitations

This is a regular orthogonal packing estimate, not a full three-dimensional bin-packing solver. It uses one orientation for every item. It does not combine rotations, model irregular shapes, compression, carton wall thickness, protective material, weight limits, or guarantee the global optimum. Confirm critical shipments with a physical packing test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix units?

No. Choose one unit and enter every measurement in that same unit. The final quantity is unit-independent.

Does the tool rotate the product?

Yes. It checks every unique 90-degree, axis-aligned rotation—up to six orientations.

Why might the real quantity be lower?

Real cartons need clearance, packaging material, and may have weight or handling limits. Use internal carton dimensions and leave a practical safety margin.

Does Kindiv store my measurements?

No. This version calculates locally in your browser and does not submit these values to a server.
